How to give a Guru the finger!
April 27, 2008

In our heart of hearts we know that the latest Guru course, membership site or seminar is over-priced rehashed horse poop so why do we continue to subscribe to their newsletters?
It’s just insane the amount of time I wasted reading their latest sales pitches for their, or their Joint Venture partners, latest BIG THING! At least now I do it for a reason i.e. this site and trying to convince you, dear reader, to hit the unsubscribe link on all those mails and be amazed and delighted by how much more you get done on your computer every day!
As I’ve said before it’s this constant fear we all have that if we are out of the loop we might be missing something. It’s insane, we’re insane - surely we know what’s needed? We have a site or a blog or an affiliate link and we promote/market that to the best of our ability to get traffic and we then do our very best to convert that traffic into sales. That’s all there is to it, it’s pretty simple.
But we insist on over complicating it - that and looking for the next ‘quick fix’. Sure, some people are better at this than others and we can all learn new ways to tweak what we do and get better at it but giving a Guru $5000 is not the way to do that.
My New Years resolutions this year were all Internet related and here they are:
- Have state of the art multiple back up systems in place to save all my work, every day.
- If I haven’t read or used a file or program on my computer in the last year delete it.
- Keep my Anti-rus and Firewall software up to date
- Unsubscribe to every list I’m on
- If I can’t unsubscribe have it directed direct to my Spam Folder.
An external hard drive and a brilliant free program called SyncBack which makes sure my MyDocs folder is ‘mirrored’ on my external hard drive fixed #1. Plus a $50 a year application called Carbonite does exactly the same but saves my data on a computer server somewhere in the USA.
#2 took me an afternoon of ruthless house cleaning. Once done I ran the brilliant free Cache Cleaner program to tidy everything up. Deleting all those unused applications and e-books certainly reminded me of how much money I’d spent last year on searching for that elusive ’secret’ that is promised by the Gurus.
#3 Sorted with AVG from Grisoft.com
#4 & #5 Boy this took a while! Went through my Inbox and then unsubscribed as the new ones came in. I was amazed at how many of the wannabee Gurus were trying to sell me something virtually daily. Anway, end result was a 70% reduction in my daily incoming mails and, I reckon, 30 minutes to an hour of rescued time. In a year that’s the equivalent of between 4 & 9 working weeks!
Boy I was on a roll now and I worked out that all that saved time could be invested into a new site, this site
! Then I realised I’d have to still track what those Gurus were up to - an ongoing dilemma.
So, in conclusion, to give any Guru the finger cut them off at source, unsubscribe yourself from their list. But make no mistake they won’t miss you, there’s plenty more where you came from my friend.
Oh yeah, if you’re still living in fear of ‘missing out’ follow my Resolution #6 and join a first rate and affordable Web 2.0 Marketing Membership Site
That way I still get access to all the latest marketing info to cutting edge information as to how to boost my rankings and get more traffic plus I can network with a bunch of serious marketers just like me, well better than me truth be told. Also they do all the research so I don’t have to - love it! Oh yeah did I say it’s under $30 a month - man the Gurus won’t be happy ![]()
If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to the Gurus Go Home RSS feed. That way you'll know when the site is next updated.
